Padel tournaments in Essen

GPS stands for German Padel Series — the official ranking and tournament system of the DPV. Each GPS tournament is assigned a category that determines the difficulty level and the ranking points awarded. Categories range from GPS 50 (beginner) through GPS 200 and GPS 500 up to GPS 1500 (professional level).

To keep fields fair, a team points rule applies: the combined GPS points of both players must not exceed the limit for the chosen category. In GPS 50 events, this automatically ensures you play against teams at a similar beginner level.

To enter a GPS tournament, you need three things: a playing partner, a free account on the RankedIn platform and a valid DPV membership. The annual membership costs €59 for adults, with a weekly pass available for €18 and a youth membership for €12.

The entry fee is capped at a maximum of €45 per player according to DPV regulations, and most tournaments charge between €20 and €45 per team. Registration typically closes on Monday at 22:00. The draw is published on Wednesday at 22:00.

Padel tournaments are always played in doubles (2 vs 2). Most tournaments start with a round-robin group phase followed by a knockout round. Matches are played as best-of-3 sets, with a tiebreak to 7 points at 6-6. In the deciding third set, a match tiebreak to 10 points is commonly used.

A special feature of padel: at deuce (40-40), the Golden Point is played — a single, decisive point. The returning team chooses which side to receive from. Tournament duration depends on the size of the draw: expect half a day to a full day.

For your first padel tournament, you'll need: a padel racket, padel shoes, a towel and enough water. Balls are usually provided by the organiser. Plan enough time — there are breaks between matches, but you should be available for the entire tournament block.
